Chapter 364: A Powerful Slap in the Face
Vera Xavier replied calmly, "All the brightly colored, beautiful mushrooms in the world are poisonous. They look pretty, but they’re rotten to the core. Any creature that touches one is doomed."
Aaron Cheney clapped for her. "What a vivid description, Vera!"
Skylar Crowe was about to start cursing, but Susan Caldwell stopped her with a gentle smile. "Skylar, there’s no need to get into a war of words with her. Don’t lower yourself to her level. Besides, running her mouth is all she can do."
Skylar Crowe snorted and shot Vera Xavier a cold glare.
Vera Xavier merely offered a faint smile. ’I know Susan Caldwell quite well. The Susan of this era is less formidable than the one from my past life, but she’s still perfected the art of putting on a false front.’
By now, the other jade appraisers were starting to get bored. This was clearly a one-sided slaughter. ’What a shame,’ they thought. ’That girl is gorgeous, but she’s not too bright. Of all the people to provoke, she had to pick a young lady from Veridia. This is basically a death wish!’
A few of them poured some tea and, out of sheer boredom, started chatting amongst themselves.
Seeing Vera Xavier’s composure, Susan Caldwell couldn’t be bothered to keep up the act. She crossed her arms. "You’re finished this time."
"We’ll see about that," Vera Xavier said calmly.
Just then, the artisan cutting the stones exclaimed in pleasant surprise, "I’ve hit jade! I’ve hit jade!"
Susan Caldwell’s face stiffened, but she said, "Even if you find jade in that kind of rock, it’ll be a low-grade bean-type at best. It’s worthless."
Alistair Forrest said loudly, "Not necessarily! Wait... It’s glass-type!"
Susan Caldwell whipped her head around to look. She could tell at a glance that the jade from Vera Xavier’s stone was indeed glass-type, and its color was even a shade better than the piece she had just revealed.
However, Vera Xavier’s piece of jade was much smaller than hers, so it wasn’t as valuable overall. Susan didn’t pay it much mind, saying nonchalantly, "Just a lucky break. The rest will probably be nothing but stone."
Vera Xavier gave her a devastatingly sweet smile. "Let’s wait and see."
As it turned out, Vera’s "let’s wait and see" was a massive slap in the face for Susan Caldwell.
The next ten stones, whether large or small, all yielded jade. Almost all of them were glass-type, and the worst among them was still a high-quality ice-type. While none of them reached the coveted Emperor Green grade, their colors were all exceptional!
Susan Caldwell’s expression grew increasingly foul. Aaron Cheney felt like he was on a roller coaster; he had thought he was doomed, but now he was saved!
Alistair Forrest’s feelings were the most complex. He had initially been certain that Vera Xavier would lose, yet her pile of worthless-looking rocks had somehow produced so much high-grade jade!
He stroked his chin. ’That’s the woman I have my eye on, all right. Her judgment, her ability... Wow. She really makes me proud!’
Vera Xavier turned to Susan Caldwell. "Shall we keep going?"
By this point, the quality and quantity of the jade she had revealed were more than enough to utterly crush Susan Caldwell.
Susan Caldwell, her face pale, stammered, "This is impossible!"
’How could that pile of junk rocks produce so much jade? How could I possibly lose to Vera Xavier, that country bumpkin?’
Vera Xavier laughed softly. "The proof is right in front of you. What’s so impossible about it?"
The jade advisor Susan Caldwell had brought stared at the pile of stones, then looked at Vera Xavier in utter astonishment. "How did you do it?" he asked.
