Chapter 889 X-Men's Christmas Gift
Compared to last year's Christmas, this year's Christmas was much more festive for the X-Men and the entire Xavier Academy. The academy finally looked like a proper academy: the number of mutant students had exceeded five hundred and was still increasing. Professor Xavier had also returned to the academy, and the entire X-Men suddenly had a backbone again. Apart from Jean Grey, who was still missing (her fate was unknown), the overall situation of the mutants could be described as positive and uplifting.
When Peter arrived, the entire school was in a rare atmosphere of joy. Not a single person was dressed in an X-Men costume; everyone was in civilian clothes. Peter wasn't wearing his Spider-Man costume either, just civilian clothes, like a regular student. A huge Christmas tree stood in front of the main building. Peter walked over and saw ice crystals and other things hanging on it. As for presents, they weren't piled up in this public place.
Of course, Xavier's family is large and wealthy, so he can certainly afford to make money.
Peter stood under the Christmas tree, carefully examining it. The ice crystals on the tree were shimmering with different colors of light. Peter watched for a while until someone appeared beside him and asked, "What do you think? Do you think it's pretty?"
Peter heard a familiar voice, turned around, and saw Katie with her hands behind her back. He smiled and said, "It's very special and beautiful. How do these ice crystals light up?"
"I'm not entirely sure either. It was Bobby (Iceman) and Qianhuan who put it together. Qianhuan said she wanted to book all the fireworks for the entire academy, but I don't think that's possible." Katie said, glancing at Peter, "Are you here for the Christmas party?"
"Yes, I can't stay all the time. I have to attend the Avengers' Christmas party. After all, I'm still an Avenger. But the good news is that your Christmas party starts early, so I can come early and have some fun."
Katie laughed and said, "Okay, I'll show you."
The two then began to stroll through the academy, where a large number of students were playing wildly. Today, unusually, no one was restricting them or training them to master any skills; as long as no accidents occurred, everyone was free to do as they pleased. Professor Xavier, smiling, was wheeling around the academy when he happened to see Katie and Peter passing by.
"Hello, Peter." The professor nodded to Peter when he saw him, and Peter quickly replied. The professor then smiled at him and said, "I'm glad you could come to the academy. To be honest, I've never seen an academy like this before. Even before this—the teachers would worry about what might happen at Christmas. But this year is different. Everyone can clearly feel the improvement in the situation of mutants."
When mutants are the only group of super-powered humans, humans often feel fear because these people not only have superpowers, but also superpowers that can be inherited. This is why humans' fear and aversion to mutants are so obvious.
However, with the emergence of the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and other superpowered individuals, and the fact that superpowers are no longer exclusive to mutants, humanity's fear of mutants is rapidly decreasing. Everyone realizes that they are no longer special, and since that's the case, they don't seem so scary anymore.
"I don't know if that's true, Professor, but perhaps everything really will be alright."
"Yes, children." The professor nodded and then told them to continue playing. "I won't bother you any longer. Oh, by the way, Scott said he has a gift for you, and he should have given it to you a long time ago."
Peter readily agreed, and as the professor left, Katie asked curiously, "What gift was it?"
"I don't know either—we'll find out when the time comes."
The two continued walking and came across an ice rink where ice figures were fighting. Katie looked at Peter with some anticipation: "How about it, want to go play together?"
"Are you really going to play?"
Peter's question left Katie a little confused, so Peter joked, "I'm just—worried that you might suddenly get nervous and fall down the slide."
Katie paused for a moment after understanding what Peter meant, then suddenly took a step back and ran towards the ice park. Peter looked at the ice slide that was thirty or forty meters high and followed her.
Katie climbed quickly and reached the top of the slide in no time. Iceman, who had actually left the X-Men but was still with the angel who had come to celebrate Christmas with her, was acting as a safety officer. Peter climbed to the very top of the slide, where Katie was already sitting. She waved to him, waiting for the two of them to slide down together.
Peter reached the top of the slide, and the Ice Man beside him glanced at the people waiting behind him and confirmed, "Ready? If you're ready, we can go."
"no problem."
After Peter was seated, Katie looked at the Iceman with great excitement: "When do we start? So I can be prepared!"
A giant ice hand shoved Katie off the cliff. Bobby tried to do the same to Peter, but Peter had already fallen off without even making a sound.
It seems that a slide several thousand meters high is not a big challenge for Spider-Man.
Peter, having successfully reached the bottom, stood up and helped Katie up: "How was it? Want to try again?"
"Hmm? Oh, no, I'm worried that if I try again, I'll really go through it. By the way, didn't the professor say that Cyclops had a gift for you? Let's go get it."
Downstairs in the dormitory, Peter saw Cyclops and the White Queen, both wearing Santa hats. After not seeing each other for a while, the two seemed to have become quite intimate, chatting and laughing together. If at first Cyclops was worried about some conspiracy between the White Queen and the Hellfire Club behind her, now that the Professor X had returned, they hardly worried about that issue anymore.
"Oh, hey—Peter."
Cyclops almost called out the wrong name, but quickly realized: "Well, we've prepared a gift for you, an X-Men suit, made especially for you."
"—" Peter almost thought he had misheard: "Wait, didn't you give us a set of this?"
"It's different from last time. You can think of it as a special Christmas edition, or rather, last time we gave you a classic edition, this time it's more modern."
As he spoke, Cyclops took the gift box from Emma's hand: "Actually, we thought about giving something else, but in the end we felt that this was the best choice, as it best represents our feelings."
"Even if you're not a mutant, Spider-Man, we still consider you our friend, even one of us. You can be an X-Men, the best X-Men ever."
