It's 3 a.m., and the city of Batman is brightly lit.
Chen Tao just received a message from the riddle teller.
Our Mr. Nigma obediently locked himself back in his transparent cell, and even patched up the hole he had dug with an iron spoon with plaster.
The Riddler is one of the smartest people in the world; he can do everything. So it makes perfect sense that he can mend walls, right?
Both clowns have been captured alive.
Now all that's left are nuclear bombs, I guess.
Chen Tao thought to himself silently.
He sat on the floor of Arkham Asylum, conserving his energy, with Bane lying on the ground beside him and the Joker, who had been severely beaten after using Titan Venom.
Two muscular men were piled naked together, the Joker's body was leaking air little by little because there was no venom, and then Bane pressed him down.
Defeating the Joker didn't take much effort on him, and Bane seemed to be finished as well.
But Chen Tao is still making the most of every moment to rest.
Thomas Wayne and Martha Wayne, now free from Bane's control, stood there dumbfounded, like a pair of parents waiting for their child to come home from kindergarten.
"80% of the missiles have been destroyed!"
Lucius's voice boomed into the communicator: "84%!"
He spoke rapidly, "86%, Batman, if the missiles aren't all destroyed before they leave the atmosphere..."
"92%!"
He shouted, "Well done, Poison Ivy!"
"98%!"
Chen Tao listened silently to his increasingly loud voice, which burst out of the headset and shouted in unison with Lucius's heartbeat.
And then, finally!
"100%!"
Chen Tao heard Lucius excitedly say, "We won!"
He sat down in his seat, looking completely exhausted, breathing heavily.
"I can hardly believe we did it. We've been planning this for so long," Lucius said. "So many pre-made missiles, even the most advanced missile defense systems would need an element of luck to stop them all..."
He clicked his tongue in amazement, then lavished praise on Poison Ivy, and then he heard Batman say to him:
"Lucius, you've used up all your interceptor missiles, haven't you?"
Lucius paused for a moment.
"Yes," he said, "but we intercepted all the missiles, and the worst-case scenario you mentioned did not occur."
Chen Tao sighed.
"In Gotham. If there's a worst-case scenario, it's going to happen."
Lucius heard him make a conclusion first, and then continued, "Check the satellite footage, Lucius."
He heard the other person say, "Did you see the nuclear flash from up there?"
Lucius felt a sudden jolt.
He rushed to the satellite control panel and was stunned to see the satellite imagery was completely empty.
He was so overjoyed that he overlooked an obvious fact:
Even if the interceptor missile successfully intercepted the nuclear weapon, they should still be able to hear it at that close range.
And since it's been completely silent, that means...
"That nuclear missile wasn't among the missiles we intercepted!"
Lucius groaned, "Good heavens!"
"What happened?"
"This means the worst has happened." Chen Tao sighed heavily.
"The Joker was tricked. Someone used him to distract us and force us to reveal our hand."
He said:
"We cannot ignore the possibility that nuclear warheads might actually be in these missiles, so we must intercept them all with our prepared interceptor missiles."
"And once we've used up all our interceptor missiles..."
"That mastermind can then calmly launch a real nuclear missile!"
Lucius's voice trembled slightly: "But this doesn't make sense. Who could do this? Who could manipulate the Joker and control him like this?"
"Who could devise such a meticulous plan? How could he be so certain that everything would unfold as he envisioned? And how did he manage to conceal his presence from us—"
"It's obvious," Chen Tao replied, "someone who's been in front of us from the very beginning."
Chen Tao stared intently at Bane, who was lying on the Joker.
The other person seemed to still be immersed in the effects of nitrous oxide, their smile stretching from the corners of their mouth all the way to their ears, a humorous and innocent laugh.
"A person who appears to have been defeated by the clown."
He continued:
"In this world, the more complex a plan is, the greater the potential rewards, but also the easier it is to fail."
This is because complex plans have too many variables, and the planners often lack sufficient control over the entire plan, thus frequently leading to failure.
"But if we look at it from another angle... if someone can completely control every corner of a complex plan, firmly grasp the most crucial link in the entire plan, fully control the actions of a scapegoat, and then step forward at the last moment to reap everything—"
"So theoretically speaking, a super complex plan would be more likely to achieve his goal than a simple and brute force approach."
Lucius said, "I think I understand what you mean..."
Chen Tao switched Lucius's voice to speakerphone.
"But who is this person? Who is this person who controls everything behind the scenes...?"
"Yes, I'm curious too." Chen Tao stared intently at Bain lying on the ground. "Who could this person be?"
A dead silence.
The air was still, breathing in sync with Chen Tao. Then, the world was stripped of its bizarre and fantastical veil.
call--
"it's me."
The twisted smile on Bain's face vanished abruptly.
He got up from the ground expressionlessly, his rough skin rubbing against the floor with a soft, rustling sound.
"This is your real method for weakening me, isn't it?"
Chen Tao looked at him without any surprise: "That poison that supposedly destroyed my body was just a ruse, wasn't it?"
"Of course, my bat."
Bain replied, "Always so perceptive."
He said, "I have studied your nanobody, that body made of unknown high technology, which has clearly transcended the realm of humanity."
"I regret to inform you that I originally hoped to create such a cup of poison... for you."
He emphasized the word "you".
"Unfortunately, I don't really have any expertise in micro-engineering."
He said sincerely, "If there is a next time, I will definitely learn it."
"But now."
Bain suppressed his excitement and elation, speaking in a calm and steady tone, trying to maintain a completely emotionless tone.
He had no desire to reveal his cunning and smugness in front of Batman, nor did he want to show Batman those murderous, fervent, and high-pitched yet melodious low murmurs.
"You have to stop that real nuclear bomb. You alone, only you can do it."
Bain said, "You must confront their attack head-on."
"Ah, I know," Chen Tao replied in a low voice.
He muttered, "I knew it would turn out this way. There's always a worst-case scenario."
"It's always like this."
I'm completely out of ideas, my mind is blank. Tomorrow's Saturday, so I'll add an extra chapter!
