Chapter 718: Jiang Ran Heads to Aisen Town
Chapter 718: Jiang Ran Heads to Aisen Town
“You’re right, Xiao Chun, honey.”“Whether or not it’s that murderer, the fact remains that Xiao He nearly died yesterday—that’s solid proof.”
“By the way, Xiao He, have you made any enemies lately?”
Xiao Chun’s boyfriend still seemed unwilling to give up on his detective fantasies.
“Enemies? I don’t think so. Ever since I came to Nancheng City, I haven’t actively argued with anyone or made any enemies.”
Xiao He recalled every bit of her time in Nancheng City, and she couldn’t remember offending anyone.
Xiao Chun’s boyfriend pressed on: “What about anyone who’s been pursuing you pretty aggressively?”
Xiao He’s face instantly flushed, though it wasn’t very noticeable since her skin was on the darker, yellower side.
“Yeah, there are a few.”
Back when she was in her village, Xiao He had never realized she was so popular. After all, there were quite a few girls in her village, and matchmakers rarely visited her home—her looks weren’t great, and her education was poor. But ever since she started working at the electronics factory, plenty of men had asked for her WeChat.
Whether they were young, around twenty, or in their thirties, or even more absurdly, men in their forties and fifties—they all came asking for her WeChat.
She didn’t know whether to be happy about being pursued by so many men, annoyed, or feel something else entirely.
Anyway, when faced with those WeChat requests, she gave out her contact info to most of them.
After giving it out, some people would relentlessly pursue her, but she never agreed to anything.
Xiao Chun then asked her boyfriend, “Hey, what are you getting at with those questions? Don’t tell me you think the person who attacked Xiao He last night wasn’t that recent murderer, but one of her pursuers?”
“That’s ridiculous! Even if someone gets rejected, they wouldn’t go as far as murder, right?!”
Xiao Chun’s boyfriend adjusted his completely non-existent glasses.
“That’s where you’re wrong. Some people are extreme, regardless of gender. Maybe they’ve been chasing Xiao He without any success, and combined with this recent series of murders, they might just be pretending to be that murderer to force themselves on Xiao He! Who knows!!!”
Xiao Chun frowned. “Huh, actually... that kind of makes sense...”
“I remember I was once pursued by a guy. He was really good to me at first, so we got together. But later, I got sick of how unhygienic he was and wanted to break up. He ended up threatening me with suicide—cutting his wrists or jumping off a building.”
Xiao Chun’s boyfriend was stunned. “Wait, why have I never heard about this before?”
Xiao Chun shot him a glare. “That was ages ago. Besides, you never told me about your ex-girlfriends either!!!”
He shrank his neck and quickly changed the subject. “Anyway, I think those few guys pursuing Xiao He are all suspicious. But Xiao He needs to figure out for herself who’s the most extreme and most likely to do something like this.”
Xiao He seemed to take it seriously and really started thinking about it.
It was Xiao Chun who patted Xiao He on the shoulder and said, “Alright, don’t listen to his nonsense. Just rest up and recover well. I’ll take leave for you at the factory.”
Xiao He nodded. “Thank you, Xiao Chun.”
Xiao Chun gave an awkward smile, knowing that if she hadn’t asked Xiao He to pick her up, none of this would have happened.
Once Xiao Chun and her boyfriend left, Xiao He lay in her hospital bed, staring at the ceiling. Her eyes fixed on that vast expanse of white.
“Sigh, why has everything been so unlucky ever since I came to Nancheng City? First, I ran into that illegal taxi driver—if it weren’t for that really handsome guy, Jiang Ran, saving me, I don’t know what would’ve happened. And then last night, I had to go through this again.”
“Does Nancheng City just not agree with me? Like those old folks say...”
...
Two or three days passed, and that night, Jiang Ran packed his bags, ready to head to the airport.
They had said they’d head to Europe in two weeks, but that wasn’t exactly true. Two weeks from now would be the start of the onboarding training, so during the second week, he’d actually be flying to Europe.
Jiang Ran had to admit he was a bit envious of passports from developed countries. Those passports allowed visa-free travel to many nations—you could just hop on a plane and go. But for them, they still needed to sort out various visas. Luckily, since this was for the onboarding training led by Alice Apartment, he managed to get his visa smoothly.
The night Jiang Ran set off happened to be New Year’s Eve.
This should have been a time for family reunions and eating the New Year’s Eve dinner.
But instead of enjoying that dinner, Jiang Ran was boarding a plane for a foreign land. Still, it didn’t really matter. He was alone anyway. Even if he were at home in his Alice Apartment, eating so-called New Year’s Eve dinner alone and watching the Spring Festival Gala, there’d be no atmosphere or mood for it.
Loneliness was his constant companion.
In fact, it wasn’t just Jiang Ran, an orphan. Many young men and women like him, even those with families, also felt lonely inside.
Jiang Ran was currently waiting at the airport to board his flight, watching the Spring Festival Gala on the airport’s TV.
What struck him most about the gala was that a few of the female hosts were pretty good-looking.
As for the rest, there wasn’t much else.
Now, he observed the situation around him at the airport. Even though it was New Year’s Eve, there were still quite a few people flying out of Nancheng City tonight, just like him. Of course, it wasn’t as many as during regular holidays.
Suddenly, Jiang Ran didn’t feel so lonely anymore. After all, there were plenty of others in the same boat—waiting at the airport to board a plane instead of being at home, reunited with family for New Year’s Eve dinner.
After sitting for over an hour, Jiang Ran finally boarded the plane and waited for takeoff.
This time, he was flying first class.
It was pretty similar to the last time he flew to Macedonia Island—there’d be pretty flight attendants offering gentle service.
Of course, don’t get the wrong idea.
Not long after boarding, Jiang Ran downed a bottle of Sprite, put on his sleep mask, and drifted off.
After falling asleep, he had a dream—a very long dream.
He dreamed he arrived at Aisen Town. Just like what was said online, Aisen Town was a scenic little place with a long history and culture.
But the town vanished in an instant, consumed by blood. He saw so much blood—countless pools of it spilling across all of Aisen Town.
In his dream, Jiang Ran walked through the streets of Aisen Town. He looked around in terror but couldn’t see a single living soul, only mutilated corpses lying strewn across the road.
Then, as he walked further, he spotted a blood-soaked figure with its back to him. He dared not approach and stood frozen, staring at that bloodied back. Suddenly, the blood-soaked person turned around.
To Jiang Ran’s shock, that blood-soaked figure had a face identical to his own.
And with that, Jiang Ran was jolted awake.
