Chapter 394 394: So You're the Fucking Ladies of the Wood, Huh?
Chapter 394 394: So You're the Fucking Ladies of the Wood, Huh?
"I am giving you one minute to leave this place."
The crowd exchanged glances and began whispering amongst themselves.
Someone shouted, "Who are you? Guards? Guards!"
Lynn ignored them and started counting down: "Fifty-eight, fifty-seven…"
In the crowd, two men exchanged a look, as if reaching a decision. They drew daggers and, using the cover of the crowd, crept toward the witcher. When they were close enough, they lunged at Lynn, their daggers glinting brightly in the firelight.
Snap! Snap!
The others didn't even see Lynn move. The two men were sent flying back with even greater speed, crashing heavily onto the ground. Both of their faces were deeply caved in, as if struck by a battering ram.
Lynn, meanwhile, looked as if nothing had happened, still standing calmly in place, counting down.
At this, some people finally couldn't sit still.
The first to rise were the villagers who had only been invited to Bald Mountain this year. They watched the bloodstains on Lynn's clothes and the exaggerated size of Aerondight—a sword no ordinary man could lift—with mounting dread…
After a quick calculation in their minds, they got up, skirted the place where Lynn stood, and fled down the mountain path.
When one person leads, others follow. Soon, a large group scrambled past Lynn, running away.
But more than half the people remained by the bonfires.
"Time's almost up, now," Lynn warned.
At his reminder, a few more people finally stood up.
However, the rest did not budge an inch, even after the countdown finished. Instead, they lowered their heads and began praying to the Ladies of the Wood, who were gathered deep within the tree roots.
Lynn pulled Aerondight from the ground. He walked up to the nearest villager and, without a word, brought his sword down.
The villager collapsed without even a gasp.
Seeing that he was truly prepared to kill, a few more people were terrified into running toward the mountain path.
He ignored those who still feared and fled.
He would only kill those who wouldn't even run.
In short order, the clearing held no living person other than himself. Blood stained the earth, and the Ladies' followers lay scattered in death. It was pitiful that these worshippers prayed to their Ladies for salvation until the very end, yet the Ladies of the Wood did not show their faces, even as Lynn used Igni to burn their bodies to ash.
Did they think these followers weren't worth saving? Or was there another reason?
Lynn didn't know, but he soon would.
Through his Detect Evil, Lynn had already spotted three deep red auras deep within the oak roots inside the mountain. Who else could they be but the three Crones?
Since they wouldn't come out, he would go to them.
Not far from the clearing where the worshippers had gathered, there was a doorway leading into the mountain. He kicked the door open, revealing a tunnel into the heart of the mountain.
There was no light inside.
This was no difficulty for him.
Lynn drank a Higher Cat Potion, and the dim tunnel instantly brightened in his vision. Carrying Aerondight on his shoulder, Lynn strode inside.
After walking for a distance through the winding mountain path, he heard singing. As he got closer, however, he found a bloated, monstrous creature. This monster was a Foegus, a type of Relict, and it was the guardian of the mountain tunnels, allowing passage only to those permitted. Intruders would be killed and eaten.
The monster stopped its tuneless song and looked over. "Are you the noisy one, human? What do you want? Do you wish the bards to compose a ridiculous song about your clownish antics?"
"Is that all you have to say before you die?"
"Arrogance!"
The monster burst into laughter as if hearing a hilarious joke. The cave shook with its mirth, and dust and pebbles rained down.
It rose from the ground and lunged, transforming into a foul gust of wind. Its speed was impressive, especially for its size. A hideous grin stretched across its face. It seemed to already see the witcher's head being crushed between its thick, fat fingers, just like the other trespassers who hadn't met the criteria to approach the Ladies of the Wood.
However…
"Hmm?"
The witcher in front of the monster abruptly vanished, and immediately afterward, the monster's perspective began to spin wildly.
"Is that… my body? But how could it… be headless?"
Thud!
The monster's head hit the ground. Its headless body crashed heavily beside it.
After burning the monster's corpse, Lynn continued forward.
The interior of the mountain was enormous. The tunnels crisscrossed, complex and confusing, as if the entire mountain had been hollowed out.
Lynn searched these complicated tunnels for a full hour before he finally found the path leading to the heart of the roots.
Lynn jumped from an interior waterfall, descending for about ten seconds before finally plunging into the pool below. He swam to the surface, looked around, and headed toward the only direction that showed light.
The center of the roots was a massive cavern. Oak roots covered the walls, and in fact, roots could be seen everywhere inside the mountain. The ground was covered with ankle-deep water. In the center, a large cauldron was propped up, boiling with the meat of an unknown animal, emitting a meaty fragrance.
Three women, each possessing exceptional figure and beauty, stood around the cauldron, occasionally adding seasonings.
Noticing the witcher's arrival, one of the beauties was the first to greet Lynn.
"Ah, welcome, Witcher. Welcome to our feast."
Another beauty added, "Although we did not invite you, rules are only for mortals. An exception is naturally made for a hero."
"Your reputation has long reached Velen. Slayer of the Flesh Mother, Expeller of Dagon's Shadow, the strongest witcher in history, we welcome you."
The last beauty spoke, "Upon hearing of your arrival in Velen, we three sisters were overjoyed. Today, we finally get to meet you. If you agree, we three sisters are willing to follow you from this day forward and pledge our loyalty to you."
Lynn stepped into the cavern, wading through the water. "So you're saying you'll let me command you?"
The three sisters bowed in unison. "Naturally."
"Then I command the three of you to commit suicide immediately. Begin."
The air suddenly went silent.
The three beauties exchanged bewildered glances.
Clearly, they had imagined many scenarios, but they had never anticipated that Lynn's demand would be this?
This isn't right, is it?
Shouldn't the small head be controlling the big one?
Lynn was certainly not the first person to break into the deep roots of Bald Mountain. Countless heroes had trod this path before him.
And then, there was no 'then.'
They all became food for the Crones.
